Chipwi HPP is the fifth cascade HPP planned on the main stream of the Maykha River. Its dam site is about 150 km from Myitkyina City and about 10 km from Chipwi Village. Its installed capacity is 3400 MW and average annual energy is 17,770 GWh. Its dam is a 206 m high concrete gravity dam. The reservoir has a normal pool level of EL400m and a total storage of 2.498 billion cubic meters.


The preliminary works of Chipwi HPP were commenced in December 2010. But all personnel were evacuated and the Chipwi HPP was suspended due to armed conflicts in north Myanmar on April 26, 2012. Before suspension, site formation, in-site roads, temporary camps, river-crossing bridge, Panwa-Chipwi Road (an external road) and other works were commenced.
